When is Goldfrapp going to get her ass to Canada!?!

Singer Alison Goldfrapp of the British band 'Goldfrapp' performs on stage during the MTV-Designerama as part of the Popkomm music fair in Berlin, Wednesday 14 September 2005. When i saw her live at the Commodore back in 2002 she was AMAZING. this girl can perform. She was wearing a black flight attendents uniform and sang her operatic tunes like a finely tuned violin. The errie background sounds of the keyboard top it off.
Goldfrapp's site is really cool

Poo Candy?

"Poo Candy" are on display at the counter in Marton Theme Restaurant in southern Kaohsiung city, 10 May 2005. The restaurant, named after the Chinese word "Matong" for toilet, has become a hit in Taiwan's second largest city since its opening in May 2004. It touts food put in plates and bowls shaped in western toilet seats as well as the Japanese "squat toilet." Top picks on the menu are curry hot pot, curry chicken rice and chocolate ice creamin a restaurant decorated with colorful bathtubs, faucets, mirrors and shower curtains. YUCK!

The Last film about a rock star?

"Introspective artist Blake (Michael Pitt) is buckling under the weight of fame, professional obligations and a mounting feeling of isolation. Dwarfed by towering trees, Blake slowly makes his way through dense woods. He scrambles down an embankment to a fresh spring and undresses for a short swim. The next morning he returns to his house, an elegant, if neglected, stone mansion. Many people are looking for Blake--his friends, his managers and record label, even a private detective--but he does not want to be found. In the haze of his final hours, Blake will spend most his time by himself. He avoids the people who are living in his house, who approach him only when they want something, be it money or help with a song. He hides from one concerned friend and turns away another. He visits politely with a stranger from the Yellow Pages sales department, and he ducks into an underground rock club. He wanders through the woods and he plays a new song, one last rock and roll blowout. Finally, alone in the greenhouse, Blake will look and listen--and seek release."

I really enjoyed this flick, it really portrayed a what Kurt's last days might have been like. Some parts are really slow, like a 3 minute shot of leaves blowing on trees, but somehow Director Gus Van Sant manages to create an intriguing production without being too obvious, like some movies out there which try to portray the desolate lives of rock stars. Definatly would recomend this movie but don't watch it late late at night because you will really fall asleep.

Albums I am rocking too...

Alicia Keys: Unplugged

Keys is a soon-to-be actress; she will play piano prodigy Philippa Schuyler in an upcoming movie entitled Compositions in Black and White scheduled for release in 2007 (shooting to begin in 2006) [12]. She is currently shooting a film alongside Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia, Jeremy Piven and Ryan Reynolds entitled Smokin' Aces (scheduled for release in 2006) [13], in which she plays a ruthless assassin.

Goldfrapp: Supernature

Supernature is the title of Goldfrapp's third album, which was released August 22, 2005 in the United Kingdom and will be released March 7, 2006 in the United States. The first single off the album was "Ooh La La". Released on August 8, 2005 in the UK, it reached #4 in the charts.

Marizia: Transparente

When she was very young, Portuguese fado singer Mariza used to sit on the stairs separating her family's apartment from her parents' restaurant. There was always a singer and guitarist entertaining downstairs, and the more she listened, the more she wanted to be that singer. "I spent so much time sitting on those stairs," Mariza recalls during a telephone call from her home in Lisbon. "I told my father, 'I want to sing.' " She was five years old at the time. Mariza started singing right away. Because she was so young, she and her father worked out a unique system for her to remember lyrics to songs. "I didn't know how to read, so my father would draw cartoons on paper to help me learn the poems."

Dizzie Rascal

The East End of London has historically produced fascinating life-characters whose magical mixture of tragedy, bravado and humour have captured the attention of us everyday sorts seeking a little escapism. The latest product of the east end is Dizzee Rascal; an everyday street-solider successfully articulating council estate pain.

Sigur Ros

Sigur Ros’s sound is a very difficult thing to define in words. Think of a stripped down, rawer version of Radiohead with a touch of Bjork’s ethereal, falsetto vocals set against a background of slow, drawn out guitar chords. Their new album, Takk… managed to infiltrate the Billboard top 50 in its first week, beating out sugarcoated indie poster boys The Killers.

Elliott Smith

Singer-songwriter Elliott Smith died on October 21 two years ago at the age of 34. Smith died of stab wounds to the chest. Initial reports suggested suicide as a cause of death however the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Coroner's Office has not made that finding official.
Smith released his first album, Roman Candle in 1994. He would release a total of five solo albums during his lifetime. He is probably best known for his contributions to the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. One of those songs, "Miss Misery" was nominated for an Oscar (he did not win, the award instead going to Titanic.

Deerhoof

Deerhoof has churned out its spastic indie rock since 1995 and has pumped out one record per year since 2001. After 11 years, the band peaked with its latest release.

The Runners Four is a refreshing and addictive album with a delightfully ominous tone. Deerhoof does an amazing job mixing genres and styles.

Satomi Mitsuzaki continues to use her high-pitched voice on Deerhoof’s latest. The vocal qualities wielded by Mitsuzaki contrast nicely with the sprawling guitar anecdotes provided by John Dieterich and Chris Cohen. Greg Saunier utilizes multiple drumming patterns while only using a three-piece kit.

The Organ

The Organ are an all-female Canadian indie rock band formed in 2001 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Attempting to separate themselves from the new millennium surge of post-punk bands, the ladies of the Organ came together in 2001 to design their own original modern sound. Katie Sketch (vocals), Deb Cohen (guitar), Jenny Smyth (organ), Shelby Stocks (drums), and Ashley Webber (bass) all hail from Vancouver, British Columbia, and each has an appreciation for bands such as The Cure and The Smiths. In summer 2002, the Organ introduced their dark style with the release of the Sinking Hearts EP. The Canadian press and indie publications across America praised the Organ's dream pop-inflected presentation. By January, the Organ signed to Chad Kroeger's 604 imprint and Mint Records. Their full-length debut, Grab That Gun, quickly followed in 2004. Since then, they've contributed songs to the soundtrack of the Showtime original series The L Word and have become a mainstay performer at pride events.

The Bravery

The Bravery is an American indie/alternative rock band from New York City that consists of Sam Endicott (vocals/guitar), John Conway (keyboards), Anthony Burulcich (drums), Michael Zakarin (guitar), and Mike H. (bass). Their debut album reached the top twenty in the United States and the top five in the United Kingdom. Their musical style has been compared to The Strokes, The Cure, New Order, The Smiths, and, most notably, The Killers, with whom they have had a highly publicized feud.

Brazilian Girls

Brazilian Girls are an Electronica band from New York. None of the band are actually from Brazil, and only the lead singer, Sabina Scuibba is a girl. The Band released their self titled debut album in 2005. I saw them in concert last month and they were amazing, Sabina's bold performance on stage made the whole audience dance and go pretty crazy.
"Opening with 'Homme,' vocalist Sabina Scuibba sings with the same purity as Bebel Gilberto and playfulness as Bjork. The anthem 'Pussy' will have nymphos and stoners chanting the chorus 'pussy pussy marijuana' for days." --Mike Armitage, Chart Magazine.

"Rollout: An Exhibition of Wallpaper as Art"

Opening November 10th 2005, Alibi Room, 157 Alexander Street, 7:00 pm

In response to recent trends in interior, industrial, and graphic design, we present ROLLOUT: An Exhibition of Wallpaper as Art. Rollout assembles a spectacular group of 25 submissions from artists, designers, academics, photographers, and creative collectives to produce multiple visions of what wallpaper can be. These will be shown in situ applied to a variety of surfaces. All designs are easy to customize and easy to apply and are available to order on the spot!
Today the realms of aesthetics and design are no longer only accessible to the rare few, but are available to all, whether as creators or consumers. Today we are entering an age of decoration where people are free from the bland brand slavery of corporate design and tyranny of glossy magazine chic.

There’s too much minimalism. Stark minimalist interiors, so prevalent in the late nineties, have waned in popularity in recent years. The concrete coldness of the heavily marketed “loft” look has given way to a renaissance of colour and texture within living spaces.

The new spirit of design is about the individual. People want interior spaces, and the objects that fill them, be it furniture, art, wallpaper or even music, to speak to their emotions, to reflect their unique selves rather than a brand or demographic.
People are looking more and more to their friends, to local artists, and other kindred spirits to provide them with an alternative to mass-market beauty, with design, which reflects their tastes, their hometowns and their lives.
We are all used to being able to customize and personalize our worlds, from our ring-tones, to our vintage bikes, to our i-pods. So why can’t our wallpaper be like our music: beautiful, eclectic, and one of a kind?

Nina's Blog Spot

This week was a busy week for me, Friday I went to work with Chris and hung out with all the crew over at Adbusters, Mark tried to feed me dougnuts but Chris kicked his ass before I could grab one. Then I came home and ate a dehydrated meat bone for 3 hours before climbing into bed with Chris and biting his feet and legs for an hour. Finally Nick put me to bed. I am looking for a winter sweater right now and have gone all the way to Surrey's Petsmart to find the right look, it's hard with my petite physique, I don't want anything with stencilled bones or other "Dog" characteristics. Hmmm maybe Chris will take me to Holts!

Keys takes it higher with MTV Unplugged

Alicia Keys performed and taped her installment of the MTV Unplugged series in July 2005 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. During this live session, Keys added brand-new arrangements to her original songs such as "A Woman's Worth" and "Heartburn", and performed a few choice covers. Part of Keys' audience also included her guest performers; she collaborated with rappers Common and Mos Def for "Love It or Leave It Alone", reggae artist Damian Marley for "Welcome to Jam Rock" and Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine for a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses".
In addition to a cover of "Every Little Bit Hurts", previously performed by singers such as Aretha Franklin and Brenda Holloway, Keys also premiered two new original songs: "Stolen Moments", which she co-wrote with soul singer Al Green, and "Unbreakable". The session was released on CD and DVD on October 11, 2005. Known simply as Unplugged, the album opened at number one on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 chart with 196,000 units sold in first week of release. The debut of Keys' Unplugged was the highest debut for an MTV Unplugged album since MTV Unplugged in New York (1994) by Nirvana, and the first Unplugged by a female artist to debut at number one. Keys also became the first female R&B artist to have three consecutive number one debuts on the Billboard 200 album chart in as many releases. Her performance was similar to Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and James Brown in one. This girl has soul!
